Frequently asked questions

Should I use PNG or JPG for a converted HEIC photo?

Use JPG for regular photos (smaller file size); use PNG if you need lossless quality or plan to edit the image further. For most photos, the HEIC to JPG tool is the better fit.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No, the HEIC file is decoded and converted entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Why won't my iPhone photo open in some apps or websites?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11 - it compresses better than JPG, but plenty of Windows apps, older Android devices and web forms still don't recognize it. Converting to PNG (or JPG) turns it into a format every browser, editor and upload form understands.

Will converting to PNG lose any image quality?

No - PNG is a lossless format, so every pixel decoded from the original HEIC is preserved exactly. The tradeoff is file size: PNG files are typically several times larger than the equivalent HEIC or JPG, since HEIC and JPG both use lossy compression to shrink the file.
