Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The cutout is computed entirely on your device using an on-device AI model (WebGPU or WebAssembly). The only thing downloaded is the AI model file itself (a few megabytes), fetched once from Hugging Face's CDN and cached by your browser for next time - your photo is never sent anywhere.
What kind of photos work best?
Photos with one clear subject: a person, an animal or a product against a background. It handles fine detail like hair and whiskers well. Very soft or long drop shadows right next to the subject can sometimes be partly kept, since the model isn't always sure where the subject ends and the shadow begins.
Does it work on things other than people?
Yes. The model is tuned for portraits but also does a solid job on animals and product-on-plain-background shots. Busy scenes with multiple overlapping subjects are the hardest case for any background remover, including this one.
What file do I get back?
A PNG with a transparent background, at the same resolution as your original photo, ready to drop onto a new background or use as-is.
