600x600 is exactly double 300x300 - the resolution most sites actually deliver for a “300px” square photo on a retina/Hi-DPI screen, since those displays show roughly four physical pixels for every one CSS pixel. It’s the size to reach for when a listing, catalog thumbnail or profile photo needs to stay crisp when someone pinches to zoom, or when a platform's own guidance says something like “upload at least 2x the display size.” It's still small enough to load fast - a center-cropped 600x600 PNG is typically a few hundred KB, not megabytes.

How is the image cropped to a square?

600x600 vs 300x300 - which should I use?
600x600 has four times the pixel area of 300x300, so it stays sharp on retina/Hi-DPI displays and when a platform displays your image larger than a typical small avatar. Use 300x300 when a platform explicitly asks for that exact size or when file size matters more than sharpness; use 600x600 as a safer default for profile pictures, app icons and anywhere the image might be shown bigger than expected.
Why not just resize without cropping, so I don't lose any of the photo?
Because 600x600 is a perfect square (1:1), and almost no photo you take is already that shape - a straight resize (no crop) would squash a rectangular photo into a square, distorting faces and objects. Center-cropping trims the longer side evenly on both edges first, so nothing gets stretched.
My subject isn't centered - what can I do?
Crop the photo yourself first so the subject sits in the middle, then upload the cropped version here. This tool always crops from the exact center, so it can't compensate for an off-center subject on its own.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
