Is MD5 or SHA-1 safe to use for passwords?
No, MD5 and SHA-1 are cryptographically broken, collisions are practical to produce, so they shouldn't be used to protect passwords. They're included here mainly for checksums and compatibility with older systems. For anything security-related, use SHA-256 or SHA-512, and for storing passwords specifically, use a dedicated algorithm like bcrypt or argon2, not a plain hash.
Does whitespace or line endings change the hash?
Yes, hashing works on exact bytes. An extra space, a trailing newline, or a different line-ending style will produce a completely different hash.
Is my text sent anywhere to compute the hash?
No, SHA-1/256/512 are computed with the browser's built-in Web Crypto API, and MD5 uses a small JavaScript implementation since Web Crypto doesn't support it. Either way, your text never leaves your browser.
