Why does this need a server, unlike most tools here?
WHOIS uses its own network protocol on port 43, not HTTP, which browsers have no way to speak directly. This is one of the few tools on the site that genuinely can't run client-side, so it queries the registry from a server-side function instead.
Why is some information hidden or redacted?
Many registrars redact personal registrant details by default (privacy/GDPR protection), showing only the registrar, dates and name servers. That's the registry's policy, not a limitation of this tool.
Why did the lookup fail for my domain?
Some registries rate-limit or block automated WHOIS queries, and a few country-code TLDs don't run a public WHOIS server at all, using a web-based lookup instead.
