US & Canada Sales Tax Calculator
Work it out in either direction. Enter a pre-tax price to get the tax and total, or enter a tax-included total to back out the original price — the reverse calculation you need for expense claims, input tax credits and reconciling a receipt that only shows the final number. Covers every US state and every Canadian province and territory.

How this was calculated
HST is a single harmonized tax: the 5% federal portion and the 8% provincial portion are charged together as one 13% line.

How to back sales tax out of a total (and the shortcut that gets it wrong)
To remove tax from a tax-included total you divide, you don't subtract a percentage:
pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate) tax = total − pre-tax price Ontario, $113.00 total at 13% HST: 113.00 ÷ 1.13 = 100.00 pre-tax 113.00 − 100.00 = 13.00 HST
The tempting shortcut — multiplying the total by 0.87 for 13% — gives $98.31, which is $1.69 short. It's wrong because the 13% was charged on the smaller pre-tax figure, not on the total you're holding. The error grows with the rate: at Quebec's 14.975% the shortcut is off by about 2.2% of the invoice.
Quebec: GST and QST do not compound
This is the single most common Canadian sales tax mistake. Quebec charges 5% GST and 9.975% QST, and both are calculated on the price before tax. QST stopped being charged on the GST-inclusive amount on January 1, 2013. The combined rate is a flat 14.975% of the pre-tax price:
$1,000.00 pre-tax in Quebec GST 5% = $50.00 (on $1,000, not on anything else) QST 9.975% = $99.75 (on $1,000 — NOT on $1,050) total = $1,149.75 The pre-2013 compounded method: QST 9.975% of $1,050 = $104.74 → total $1,154.74 ✗ $4.99 too much
A word on US local rates
Canada's rates are exact: GST/HST is federal or harmonized, and PST/RST/QST are set province-wide, so a province code gives you the true rate. The US is different. Counties, cities and special districts each add their own tax, so the real rate at a given address can differ from the one across the street. This tool gives you the state rate by default and can add the population-weighted average local rate as an estimate — but it deliberately won't pretend to know your exact rooftop rate. For filing, confirm with your state's revenue department or a rooftop-accurate rate service.
Perguntas frequentes
How do I reverse HST in Ontario to find the pre-tax price?
Divide the tax-included total by 1.13. Ontario's HST is 13% (a 5% federal portion and an 8% provincial portion charged as one harmonized line), so a $113.00 total is $100.00 before tax with $13.00 of HST. Switch this tool to 'Remove tax', pick Ontario, and enter the total - it shows the pre-tax price, the HST amount and the arithmetic. This is the number you need for an input tax credit or an expense claim where you only have the final receipt total.
How do I back out sales tax from a total in California?
Divide by 1 plus the rate. At California's 7.25% statewide rate, a $107.25 total is $100.00 pre-tax with $7.25 of tax. Note that California's 7.25% already includes a 1.25% uniform local add-on, and most California addresses pay more than that once district taxes are added - the statewide average combined rate is about 9.03%. Use the 'add average local rate' toggle for a closer estimate, or your exact district rate if you know it.
Which Canadian provinces charge HST, and which charge GST plus PST?
Five provinces use a single harmonized tax: Ontario at 13%, Nova Scotia at 14% (cut from 15% on April 1, 2025), and New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador at 15%. Four charge the 5% federal GST plus a separate provincial tax: British Columbia (7% PST), Manitoba (7% RST), Saskatchewan (6% PST) and Quebec (9.975% QST). Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon charge only the 5% GST, with no provincial or territorial sales tax at all.
Does Quebec's QST get charged on top of the GST?
No - not since January 1, 2013. Both taxes are calculated on the selling price excluding tax and then added, giving a combined 14.975%. Before 2013 the QST was compounded on the GST-inclusive amount, and a surprising number of calculators and spreadsheet templates still do it the old way. On a $1,000 invoice that overcharges by $4.99 ($1,154.74 instead of the correct $1,149.75). This calculator uses the current, non-compounded method.
Are the local county and city taxes included for US states?
Only as an optional average, and the tool says so clearly. US sales tax is layered - state, county, city and special districts - so the true rate depends on the exact address, and no state-level table can be precise. By default you get the state rate alone. Ticking the local option adds the population-weighted average local rate for that state, which is a reasonable estimate for budgeting but is not the rate for any specific location. Canadian rates, by contrast, are exact at the province level.
How current are these rates, and where do they come from?
US rates come from the Tax Foundation's midyear 2026 state and local sales tax data, current as of July 1, 2026. Canadian rates come from the Canada Revenue Agency's GST/HST rate table plus each province's own PST/RST/QST rate, current for the 2026 tax year, and include Nova Scotia's April 2025 cut from 15% to 14%. Every source is linked inside the tool with an 'as of' date. Rates change, so confirm with your revenue authority before filing - this is an estimating tool, not tax advice.
