Do I need a .ico file specifically?
Not anymore for most cases, modern browsers support PNG favicons directly via <link rel="icon">. This tool generates PNGs at every size you actually need, which is simpler and looks identical in practice.
Why is my image cropped to a square?
Favicons are always square. If your source image isn't square, it's center-cropped first so nothing looks stretched or distorted.
What do I do with the zip file?
Upload the PNG files to your site's root (or wherever you serve static assets from), then paste the included favicon-tags.html snippet into your page's <head>.
