What exactly is being compared?
The plain text extracted from each PDF, page by page - the same extraction used by the PDF to Text tool. Visual differences like formatting, images, fonts or layout changes aren't detected, only the underlying text content.
What if the two PDFs have a different number of pages?
Extra pages in the longer file are compared against an empty page, so all of their lines show as additions (or removals, depending on which file is longer).
Why might a line show as changed even though it looks the same to me?
The comparison is exact-text based, so different spacing, line breaks, or how a PDF's text layer orders characters can make visually identical lines register as different. It's a good tool for spotting real content changes quickly, not a byte-perfect diff.
Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?
No. Both files are read and compared entirely in your browser using pdf.js - nothing is sent to a server.
