What does this check for?
That the file is well-formed XML with a valid <urlset> or <sitemapindex> root, that every entry has a required <loc> tag with a valid http(s) URL, that <changefreq> and <priority> values (when present) are within the allowed range, that the file doesn't exceed the sitemap protocol's 50,000-URL or 50MB limits, and that there are no duplicate URLs.
What's a sitemap index file?
A <sitemapindex> is a sitemap of sitemaps - used when a site has more URLs than fit in one file's 50,000-URL limit. It lists child sitemap URLs instead of page URLs directly, and this tool validates that structure the same way it validates a regular sitemap.
Why would a sitemap have duplicate URLs?
Usually a generation bug: the same page listed twice, sometimes with different trailing slashes or query parameters. Duplicates don't break a sitemap outright, but they add noise search engines have to sort through, so it's worth cleaning up.
Does fetching from a URL work for any site?
Yes, the URL is fetched server-side so there's no browser CORS restriction. If you enter just a domain, it tries {domain}/sitemap.xml automatically; you can also paste the exact sitemap URL if it lives somewhere else.
